Grey squirrels are a common sight in both rural and urban areas throughout Manchester and Cheshire, particularly in parkland areas, and while they can be cute and amusing, they can also present a significant pest problem. Damage caused by the squirrels gnawing can be severe and poses a fire risk if they are gnawing at electrical wiring. They can also be the cause of secondary pest infestations like fleas, ticks and similar due to the parasites they carry themselves.
Please note that in the unlikely event that you spot a red squirrel, these are viewed as an endangered species and are therefore protected by law. In this situation, rather than contacting a pest control company such as ourselves, we would recommend contacting your local council and the RSPCA.
So, if you spot or suspect grey squirrels are nesting in your property, there are a few important things that you should bear in mind.
Firstly, we must stress that you should never attempt to pet or tame a grey squirrel – while they can appear cute, their claws and especially their teeth are very sharp and they can cause physical damage with their bites. Wounds can often become infected and the risk of communicable diseases and parasites is also something to bear in mind. They are wild animals, and should be treated as such.
Secondly, if you spot an access point into a roof space that is being used by grey squirrels, you should never block this access off. Squirrels are very territorial and will cause further damage by attempting to create new access points into their nest. Additionally, if you trap a squirrel inside your property this can lead to internal damage. Squirrel incisors (their large front teeth) grow constantly and therefore need continual filing down through the act of gnawing. Unfortunately, squirrels are not picky about what they choose to gnaw on and will happily chew on anything they can reach. If they are nesting in roof spaces, this can cause structural damage as well as cause a fire risk if they chew on electrical wiring.
You should contact Manchester Pest Services as soon as possible as effective squirrel control is not only important in terms of providing a safe and healthy environment clear of rodent contamination, but is also crucial in damage limitation for both building interiors and exteriors. We are happy to provide squirrel control services across the Manchester and Cheshire areas and can be contacted for a no-obligation quote at any time.
In terms of dealing with the squirrels themselves, it is important to note that they are technically considered as vermin and we are therefore unable to simply relocate them to another area. Relocation can also be considered cruel, as grey squirrels are very territorial and the relocated squirrels will often be attacked by the squirrels already living in that area.
Our technicians here at Manchester Pest Services will use a combination of traps or Warfarin-based poisons to deal with any grey squirrel problem and are also happy to provide advice and guidance on how to squirrel-proof your premises.
